I was going to continue following the marathon program, but decided to slow down a little. I have til next June, after all! Jenn and I made plans to run on Sunday morning in a park near work. I’ve run a 5K route a couple times out of that park, and some of the view was really pretty, so I’m hoping to go that road again.

Trying to find my “tempo” pace.  Going at 6.5 mph wasn’t too bad for a while, it got tougher when I cranked to 6.8 and above.  Thinking about doing one more race this summer…there’s one going on in a neighboring town, in the middle of their festival, so it sounds perfect for the kiddies!  The burning question is…do I have my older two run the 2 miler while I do the 10 K (Daddy would wait for the kids at the finish), or do I run the 2 miler with them and include my younger son?  He has autism, so he can’t really tell me what he thinks of running races.  He did run one with us, but that was just 1/2 mile.  He’s 5, so I don’t know if a 2 mile race is too much for him.  Selfishly, I wouldn’t mind doing the longer run (what runner wouldn’t be tempted?).  On the more maternal side, I’d like to have him try a longer race, if he would be ok with it.  I think I might just have to do the 2 miler.

Speaking of the little beasties, my oldest tested for her white belt in tae kwon do tonight.  She isn’t too sure if she got it, but Daddy and I are confident.  And proud!

Starting to work those fast twitch muscle fibers, which is kind of a wierd new world. I did ok, about 430 yards x4, speeds went from about 7mph to 9 mph. Today was on the treadmill, as I’m not sure how else to measure out the distances or anything (there’s no track nearby). Ah well, I’ll feel it out in time.

Woohoo! Time to revamp goals…the half marathon is done! I suppose this is nothing new to experienced racers, but the exhilaration is hard to put into words. While I’m still waiting to feel that endorphin buzz I keep hearing about, I am a junkie for the “yeah, I did it” buzz that hits about the same time as the finish line.
I should reflect a bit on the cause behind the race. It was a memorial for a lady who was murdered just over a year ago. She had been an avid athlete, so her family did this to remember her. Her husband gave a little talk just before the starting gun, and he had to pause once or twice, seemingly to collect himself. He thanked everyone for running and for helping out, and we were off. He met us all at the finish, giving a medal to everyone who made it through.
The run route was a great pick…we spent most of the time along the shore of a gorgeous lake, and between some corn fields. Nice to watch all the corn swaying. I also got to see a couple hawks circling some trees at one point. There was a few hills, but none were especially rough.
The weather was oddly perfect for a long run. It started out overcast and just a bit chilly, which no one noticed anymore after a couple miles. Just about when the first racers would have been crossing the finish (about 90 minutes into it) the sun came out. The air turned pleasantly warm, where yesterday had been muggy and just awful. It was as though April was smiling down on us.
I’m exhilarated and proud and totally wiped out. Day off tomorrow, I think.

They are the cutest thing ever! Today was Summerfest in a neighboring town, and there was several races as part of the fun. I skipped the 3K and 5K in favor of the kid’s half mile, thinking I’d take my older two bugs. I’m really trying to make exercise part of “fun” times for them, especially my little guy, who struggles with his weight a bit. On the way to the starting line, we all got separated from my husband. He had the stroller, which is fine, but pretty soon I found myself at the starting line…still with my purse, jacket, two bottles of iced tea….oh, and my younger son, who had yet to ever race, and has autism! Oh, HUBBY……..! Nowhere to be found! I had about seven minutes to explain to my older two that they would have to run on their own, and try to get my little guy to understand that he was about to race! Anyone out there who has dealt with small kids knows that seven minutes does not cut it, and Mr. little guy has significant language delays. In the end, two kids knew what to do when they heard the starting pistol, and I used the one surefire way to get a preschooler to run. I got behind him and growled..
“Mommy’s gonna gitcha!”
He squealed laughter and took off. It was a nice little run, going over a bridge that passed over a little stream. We saw a turtle bobbing along in the water. We also passed a little pond with a fountain in the middle..lots of pretty sights for such a short distance! My little munchkin ran more than half of the race, his little headful of floppy curls bouncing. The clock at the finish line told us that he ran a pace of just under 13 minutes. Since the other kids finished before us, their paces had to be much better than their last race (12 and 16 minute miles). As soon as everyone crossed the finish, all the kiddies hit the swingset…where hubby was leaning on the stroller and waiting (AUGH!) But there were more warm fuzzies to come…while hubby kept kids occupied, I went back to the registration tent to see if there were any t shirts left. Since it was after the race, the price of shirts had dropped by half! Hmm, yup, I’ll take four, pleez…..
So from there, it was games and rides. A day of runnin and funnin!
Oh yeah….worked out too….trimmed my 5K pace a little….whatever….KIDDIE RACES, PEOPLE! How cute is that!

The countdown goes on…I’m trying to get the kidlets excited about the race on the 4th. My little girl is up for it, my son….he wants to know if he can bike it. I have no problem with him cycling, but it *is* a footrace! Stinker…I’ll tell him that girls will be watching, that will get him out there. He’s just a little snipe, but he loves the ladies!
I’m breaking in new runners, woohoo! They feel great, and the arch support is just how I like it. One thing I might try is those elastic laces…I keep tying one shoe so that the bow sits a little on the inner side, and it makes an annoying pressure point. It’s fine once I retie, but…eh…I seem to keep doing it.
Today was a good day…our first bonfire of the summer! I can still smell the smoke in my clothes, and can still taste the s’mores. We don’t do junk food like we used to, but toasted marshmallows is one treat we’ve hung on to. YUM!
I think tomorrow will be a weightlifting day.

OMG, I can’t believe the race is coming right up! Don’t freak out, Newbie, just get there and get finished…I’m going to freak out, who am I kidding? Right up until the 12th, I’ll ruminate and have nervous breakdowns all over the place, family friends and co workers will think I’m (more) completely insane, and I’ll babble like a ninny all the way to the race until my husband wants to kill me, and then I’ll step up to the starting line, take a deep breath, and just…..go.
I did the same thing before every test I ever took in college. Anyone else out there have the same pattern? Maybe we should start a crazy runner’s club or support group or something? Yeesh, I’m starting already….
